Social & Family Relationships

People You Can Count On

We are social beings. However, our fast-paced, increasingly isolating, competitive culture often leaves us lacking in social interaction. We might or might not be friends with co-workers. We might or might not attend church with people who care about us. We might or might not live in the city we grew up in. I believe that not feeling like you’re part of a community, is one of the leading causes of stress, dissatisfaction with life, depression, and anxiety. Relationships that occurred naturally in the past are harder to find and we might even feel “needy” for seeking them.

Since relationships may not come about naturally, we might have to set an intention and make a plan to discover and cultivate these relationships. There are other people seeking them, too. You’re not weird for wanting them.

Do you have people you can count on, true friends?

People Who Need People

People who need people are the luckiest people in the world, according to the Barbra Streisand song. My life is all about my family and friends. While an introvert at heart, I still need relationships to feel like a whole person. Taking time to spend with family and friends, supporting one another and enjoying one another is a critical aspect of my life.

I have been divorced, many decades ago. My wife and I have been together for over three decades. We had two children together. I’ve raised two beautiful, successful, kind, and compassionate daughters. I’ve learned what it takes to make a marriage work. I’ve dealt with the tribulations of teenagers. If you feel you are lacking in social relationships or are having issues dealing with family, maybe there are some things you can do to improve that.

What could you do to improve your social life?
